The starting point for the lighting department is the color script and the color keys. The color script defines the color and mood of the movie throughout the sequences and it tries to support the emotional of the story as we saw in the previous post, Color theory for cinematographers. The color script usually lacks detail as it is more a guide about how the color and mood will flow through the story. Once the color script is defined, the art department picks key moments of every sequence and they create the color keys, where they are much more precise about the specific lighting design of the sequence.
I enclose some color keys from Edwin Madrid for the movie Megamind. You can also visit his site to see the concept art that he has created for other Dreamwors movies.
